Shimla is set for a major transport overhaul with a proposed ₹2,200-crore infrastructure project funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB). The plan includes alternative roads, flyovers, tunnels, a cable-stayed bridge and pedestrian facilities to reduce congestion and improve urban mobility.
During a stakeholder consultation, officials discussed two proposed tunnels linking IGMC, Chhota Shimla and Sanjauli, while local MLA Harish Janartha stressed that the tunnel network should connect seamlessly with the four-lane highway to maximise traffic relief. Authorities said feasibility studies would be revisited and stakeholder suggestions incorporated into the Detailed Project Report (DPR).
The STRIDe project also proposes a cable-stayed bridge from Railway Parking to Hotel Holiday Home, multiple viaducts, road upgrades and an ambulance road. Traffic studies indicate the tunnel project could reduce vehicle flow by up to 36% on some of Shimla’s busiest stretches by 2032. Officials also confirmed that the Assembly flyover is expected to be completed by December 2026.
