Solan, July 3
Shoolini University observed World Plastic Bag Free Day by organising an interactive workshop on waste segregation for its housekeeping, operations, and landscaping staff. The session equipped participants with practical knowledge of responsible waste management and the harmful effects of plastic pollution.
A total of 65 participants attended the workshop to learn how to create a cleaner and more sustainable campus.
Observed globally since 2009, World Plastic Bag Free Day highlights the environmental impact of single-use plastic bags. While a plastic bag is often used for only a few minutes, it can take up to 1,000 years to decompose, posing a serious threat to landfills, rivers and oceans.
The workshop began with an icebreaker activity, followed by a presentation on plastic pollution and sustainable waste management. Participants also watched the documentary Mera Baba Desh Chalata Hai, which highlighted the invaluable contribution of sanitation workers in keeping communities clean and healthy.
An interactive group discussion provided an opportunity for participants to share the challenges they encounter while collecting and segregating waste across the campus. Together with the facilitators, they explored practical solutions to improve waste management practices.
The session concluded with a hands-on source segregation exercise where participants practised identifying and separating different categories of waste, reinforcing the concepts discussed during the workshop.
Mrs. Poonam Nanda, Director, Sustainability, Shoolini University, said, our housekeeping and operations teams play a vital role in maintaining a clean and sustainable campus. By equipping them with practical knowledge and skills, we are strengthening our collective commitment to environmental responsibility.
