Shimla, June 12: In a major push towards promoting fitness and holistic development among schoolchildren, Samagra Shiksha has launched an initiative to establish open gyms in PM SHRI and Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas across Himachal Pradesh.

Under the first phase, open gyms are being set up in 74 PM SHRI schools at an estimated cost of ₹2.70 crore, while 14 Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas (KGBVs) will receive similar fitness facilities with an investment of around ₹70 lakh.

The initiative aims to encourage regular physical activity, improve students’ physical and mental well-being, and foster a culture of fitness within school campuses. Education authorities believe that easy access to exercise facilities will help students develop healthy lifestyle habits from an early age while complementing their academic growth.

Officials said the move aligns with the broader vision of the PM SHRI scheme, which emphasizes quality education, sports infrastructure, health awareness and overall personality development. The open gyms are expected to provide students with opportunities to improve endurance, strength, concentration and overall fitness.

Samagra Shiksha Director Rajesh Sharma said that physical fitness is essential for the development of a healthy mind and personality. He described the initiative as a significant step towards ensuring the holistic growth of students and nurturing lifelong habits of discipline, fitness and wellness.

The project is also expected to encourage greater participation in sports and recreational activities, helping students remain active in an increasingly digital and sedentary environment.
