Dr Jaipal joins as HOD at Tree Improvement Department

Dr Jaipal Sharma has joined as the Head of Department of Tree Improvement and Genetic Resources in the College of Forestry of Dr YS Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni.

Dr. Sharma has been actively engaged in teaching, research, and extension activities in the field of forestry and agroforestry for the past 17 years. He has made significant contributions toward the improvement and evaluation of short-rotation tree species, particularly willow (Salix) hybrids, many of which are now being extensively adopted and mass planted by farmers and stakeholders in Himalayan regions.

His research involved the development, testing, and popularization of superior willow hybrids suitable for different and ecologically fragile areas and is also serving as a Task Force Member for the registration of willow varieties with the Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers’ Rights Authority and has been associated with two important externally funded projects, namely the DUS Centre for Willow and Seabuckthorn. He has also served at the College of Horticulture and Forestry, Thunag. For his contributions to forestry research, he was awarded the Brandis Prize by The Indian Forester in the year 2012.

Vice Chancellor Dr HS Baweja congratulated Dr Sharma and expressed hope that the department will reach new heights under his leadership.
