Shimla, April 21:
The serene hills of Shimla are set to witness a vibrant confluence of ideas and intellect as Bishop Cotton School Shimla prepares to host the prestigious 29th Rev. Dr. Samuel Slater Memorial English Debates. The campus is already buzzing with excitement as it welcomes some of the brightest young debaters from across the country.

First held in 1996, the Slater Debates honour Rev. Dr. Samuel Slater, who served as the institution’s first Principal from 1863 to 1885. Over the years, the event has evolved into one of India’s most respected inter-school debating platforms, celebrated for its high standards of oratory, critical thinking, and intellectual exchange.

This year’s edition will see participation from leading institutions, including The Assam Valley School, Mallinson Girls’ School, Tyndale Biscoe School, Yadavindra Public School, Auckland House School, St. Thomas’ School, La Martiniere Girls’ College, Vivek High School, Loreto Convent, Sherwood College, The Lawrence School, Wynberg Allen School, and St. Luke’s Senior Secondary School.

Local institutions such as Tara Hall School, along with Auckland House School and St. Thomas’ School, will further enrich the competition, bringing diverse perspectives and strong local participation.

Over five days, students will engage in nearly 30 debates on a wide range of contemporary and thought-provoking topics. Beyond competition, the event promises a meaningful exchange of ideas, cultures, and experiences, fostering both intellectual growth and lasting friendships.

The interaction between visiting and local schools is expected to add a dynamic dimension to the debates, showcasing varied styles of argumentation and expression. A series of curated activities alongside the debates will ensure a well-rounded and memorable experience for all participants.

As host, Bishop Cotton School takes pride in continuing this legacy of excellence, extending a warm welcome to all participants and wishing them success in what promises to be an enriching and inspiring event.
