“Fee Over Welfare?” Jairam Thakur Targets Sukhu Govt Over Charges on Maternal Healthcare

Shimla, April 11: Former Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition Jairam Thakur launched a sharp attack on the state government, alleging that welfare schemes are being replaced with “user charges,” particularly impacting women’s healthcare.
In a statement issued from Shimla on National Safe Motherhood Day, Thakur criticized the government led by Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu for introducing charges for medical procedures at Kamla Nehru Hospital, including surgeries and related services. He claimed that services which were earlier free under Himcare are now being billed, placing an additional burden on patients.
Thakur alleged that charges are being levied for procedures such as surgery, consultation, anesthesia, blood transfusion, and even basic treatment services. He termed this a shift away from welfare governance, particularly at a time when maternal healthcare requires greater support and accessibility.
He further questioned the government’s intent, stating that such steps indicate a gradual rollback of schemes like Himcare, which were designed to provide free treatment to beneficiaries. He also raised concerns over pending payments to service providers under the scheme.
Referring to various central schemes aimed at strengthening maternal and child healthcare, Thakur said governments are expected to reduce financial barriers, not increase them.
Later, Thakur also attended the cultural programme “Bhadri” organized by the Chandigarh Hati Samiti at Punjab University, where he appreciated efforts to preserve Himachali culture and traditions among people living outside the state.
