2 min read

Shimla, April 4: In a heartwarming recognition of young talent, Shimla Deputy Commissioner Anupam Kashyap felicitated two “Children of the State” — Amrit Verma and Mokshit Sharma — for their remarkable academic achievements on Saturday.

The Deputy Commissioner honoured the students with traditional shawls and caps, applauding their dedication and inspiring journey. He remarked that their accomplishments serve as a motivation for other children and reflect the power of early scientific curiosity and determination.

Amrit Verma has been selected for the state-level INSPIRE MANAK Science Workshop, an initiative by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. As part of his project, Amrit proposed a “Smart Helping Stick” designed for visually impaired individuals. Equipped with sensors, vibration motors, a speaker, and a battery, the device can detect obstacles within a range of 1–2 meters, making navigation safer and promoting independence among users. He has also received financial assistance of ₹10,000 to develop his model.

Meanwhile, Mokshit Sharma has been selected under the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme (NMMSS), which provides financial assistance of ₹12,000 annually to meritorious students from economically weaker sections to support their education from Classes 9 to 12.

The Deputy Commissioner highlighted the significance of the Chief Minister Sukhashray Yojana, under which orphaned, abandoned, and vulnerable children are given the status of “Children of the State.” The scheme ensures comprehensive support, including free education, healthcare, accommodation, skill development, and career guidance, enabling children to become self-reliant and integrated into mainstream society.

Both students completed their Class 8 education at Government High School Jakhu and are currently studying at Government Senior Secondary School, Tutikandi.

District Programme Officer Mamta Paul was also present on the occasion.
