HPNLU: Valedictory Session of International Conference on “Tax Reforms in India: Prospects and Challenges” Concludes

The two-day International Conference on “Tax Reforms in India: Prospects and Challenges,” organized by Himachal Pradesh National Law University (HPNLU), Shimla, under the leadership of its Vice-Chancellor, Prof. (Dr.) Priti Saxena, concluded today with a distinguished Valedictory Session presided over by Hon’ble Mr. Justice Vivek Singh Thakur and graced by Prof. (Dr.) V.K. Ahuja, Director, Indian Law Institute, as the Chief Guest. The Session marked the culmination of two days of rigorous academic deliberations, bringing together eminent jurists, academicians, tax administrators, and industry experts from India and abroad to deliberate on contemporary tax reforms and emerging fiscal challenges.
Hon’ble Mr. Justice Vivek Singh Thakur, while presiding over the Session, underscored the dynamic and evolving character of tax jurisprudence and the vital role of academic institutions in fostering critical discourse on legislative reforms and judicial developments. He appreciated the initiative of HPNLU in convening an international platform dedicated to nuanced discussions on taxation and policy innovation.
In his address as Chief Guest, Prof. (Dr.) V.K. Ahuja emphasized the importance of evidence-based research and institutional dialogue in shaping progressive tax policy and strengthening fiscal governance in India. He highlighted the need for harmonizing domestic tax frameworks with evolving global standards while ensuring equity, certainty, and efficiency within the system.
Prof. (Dr.) Priti Saxena, Vice-Chancellor, HPNLU, in her welcome address, reflected upon the enriching discussions held over the two days and reiterated the University’s commitment to promoting cutting-edge research and meaningful engagement in the field of business law and taxation. She observed that sustained scholarly dialogue is indispensable for developing a transparent, accountable, and resilient tax regime.
The Conference was organized by the Prof (Dr.) Girjesh Shukla, Director, Centre for Business Law and Economics, HPNLU, in collaboration with the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) and Taxmann. The deliberations over the course of the Conference covered structural reforms in direct and indirect taxation, judicial trends, global tax norms, digital economy taxation, and sustainable tax governance.
The Valedictory Session concluded with a formal Vote of Thanks by Prof (Dr.) Alok Kumar, Registrar, HPNLU, Shimla, expressing gratitude to the dignitaries, resource persons, participants, collaborators, and members of the organizing committee for their valuable contributions.
The successful culmination of the Conference reaffirmed HPNLU, Shimla’s steadfast commitment to advancing research, dialogue, and policy-oriented scholarship in areas of national and global significance.
