Shimla, Feb 27: Former Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition Jairam Thakur has welcomed the nationwide HPV (Human Papillomavirus) vaccination campaign aimed at protecting young girls from cervical cancer, calling it a historic and visionary initiative under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In a press statement issued from Shimla, Thakur said the decision to provide free vaccination to 14-year-old girls would significantly reduce the burden of cervical cancer, which continues to claim thousands of lives annually in India.
He highlighted that the ambitious programme aims to cover nearly 1.15 crore girls each year, making it one of the largest public health initiatives globally. Urging the Himachal Pradesh government to implement the scheme in mission mode, Thakur stressed the need for extensive awareness campaigns to ensure coverage in rural and remote areas. He expressed confidence that the campaign would strengthen women’s health security and contribute to a healthier, empowered future generation.
