Housing Fee Hike Hits Common Man
Shimla, Jan 07, 2026 : Former Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition Jai Ram Thakur condemned the sloganeering against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah at Jawaharlal Nehru University, calling it a reflection of frustration within Congress and Left ideologies. He said such acts under the guise of free expression undermine democratic values and the dignity of academic institutions, and demanded strict action against those responsible.
Thakur said the country recognises the leadership of Modi and Shah, crediting them for economic growth, governance reforms and strengthened internal security. He added that repeated attempts to malign national leadership would be rejected by the public, as seen earlier.
Separately, Thakur criticised the state government for increasing registration fees for residential plots and housing projects, terming the move anti-people, especially for disaster-affected families, youth and the middle class. He alleged that successive fee hikes have made housing unaffordable and urged the government to reconsider decisions that burden citizens.
