Congress to Launch Rural Awareness Campaign Against Changes to MGNREGA: Pratibha Singh

1 min read

Shimla, Jan 02, 2026: Former MP and All India Congress Committee member **Pratibha Singh** said the Congress will launch a statewide awareness campaign in rural areas against the alleged dilution of MGNREGA and the removal of Mahatma Gandhi’s name from the scheme. She said the Congress Working Committee has directed party leaders across states to initiate a mass movement on the issue.

Accusing the Modi government of weakening the law and undermining the right to work of rural people, Pratibha Singh said the scheme was given a legal framework during the UPA government under the leadership of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Sonia Gandhi, ensuring 100 days of guaranteed employment. She alleged that the new law centralises powers and curtails the role of gram panchayats. She said Congress will mobilise rural communities to press for restoration of the scheme in its original form.
