Shimla, December 21, 2025:
Shimla Deputy Commissioner Anupam Kashyap has issued a notification for the formation of sub-division level committees to relocate stray cattle to nearby gaushalas, marking the launch of a 15-day special campaign aimed at making Shimla district stray-cattle free by January 2026.
Each committee will be headed by the local SDM, with members from the Public Works Department, Block Development Office, Police, Urban Local Bodies/Panchayats, local gaushala/animal shelter representatives, and the senior veterinary officer serving as member secretary.
The committees have been directed to identify, collect, and shift all stray cattle within their jurisdiction to gaushalas within 15 days, and submit reports to the DC.
A recent livestock survey conducted by the Animal Husbandry Department identified 272 stray cattle across the district. With a gaushala capacity of around 3,500 animals—of which 2,500 are currently occupied—the administration plans to relocate the remaining animals accordingly.
Key areas with stray cattle presence include: Tutu Chowk, Tara Devi Highway, Khalini Hanuman Temple area, Naini, Kheneri Hospital vicinity, Jhakri Bus Stop, Rampur town, Nirth, Bithal, Dattanagar, Oddi, Kumarsain, Kotgarh, Matiana, Shilaru, Sandhu, Chopal, Rohru, Jubbal, and Chidgaon, among others.
Kashyap urged residents to reclaim abandoned cattle and highlighted the risks posed by harsh winters and road accidents.
