Shimla, December 16, 2025:
The Geological Survey of India (GSI) has submitted its report to Shimla Deputy Commissioner Anupam Kashyap regarding the sinkhole that appeared along the Bhattakufar road on November 22, 2025. The survey recorded a crater measuring 2.2 metres in length, 1.5 metres in width and about 4 metres in depth.
According to the report, the primary cause of the sinkhole was leakage from two water pipelines, along with secondary human-induced factors such as vibrations from tunnel construction. The GSI has recommended a complete halt to blasting activities, while permitting manual construction work.
The Deputy Commissioner has sought detailed records from the tunnelling company, including pre-construction surveys conducted in March 2024, correspondence with the administration, and compliance with safety recommendations. He reiterated that public safety remains the administration’s top priority and assured support for compensation to residents whose houses have developed cracks due to the four-lane tunnel project.
The Water Supply Department has repaired the leaking pipelines and has been asked to submit a report detailing all underground pipelines in the tunnel-affected area.
