Dharamshala, Dec 05
Former Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition Jairam Thakur on Thursday launched a sharp attack on the state government, alleging that it has been misleading the Assembly by withholding information, providing contradictory data, and repeatedly evading accountability. Speaking at the conclusion of the session in Dharamshala, Thakur said the government often claims to be “collecting information” for three years, while facts provided under the Right to Information Act are denied on the floor of the House.
He criticised the government for spending crores on publicity against opposition leaders while citizens struggle for medical treatment. “People are desperate for healthcare, families are selling their jewellery for treatment, yet the government prioritises political propaganda. There can be no greater misfortune for the state,” he said.
Thakur also expressed concern over the proposed amendment to Section 118 of the Himachal Pradesh Tenancy and Land Reforms Act, calling it a threat to the state’s interests. He urged the government to withdraw what he termed an “anti-Himachal bill,” warning that history would not forgive attempts to dilute laws protecting Himachal’s land and identity.
On the issue of rising drug abuse, the BJP legislature party began the session with an appeal to the public to “quit drugs and choose life.” BJP MLAs wore jerseys with anti-drug slogans and pledged full cooperation to the government in fighting the menace. Thakur said drug addiction, once restricted to border areas, has now spread across the state, endangering youth and weakening society emotionally and economically.
He concluded by thanking the Speaker, Assembly Secretariat, and all staff involved in conducting the session.
