Jairam Thakur Condemns Postponement of Panchayat Elections

1 min read

Shimla, October 9, 2025 – Former Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition Jairam Thakur reacted sharply to the cancellation of the Panchayat elections scheduled for December. Thakur alleged that the Sukhdu government is avoiding facing the people and using the ongoing disaster as a pretext to postpone the elections.

He claimed that the government already knows the results, predicting a decisive defeat for Congress in these elections. Thakur said that after skipping municipal and urban body polls, the government is now blocking Panchayat elections as well. He described the decision to postpone elections under the pretext of disaster as scripted, with letters written by Deputy Commissioners to justify the move.

Thakur urged the government to face its failures instead of hiding behind excuses and called for elections to be conducted as scheduled, emphasizing that disaster-affected citizens should not be left to fend for themselves.
