Shimla, Sept 19: The Himachal Pradesh Education Department has issued strict directions banning the use of mobile phones in government schools during school hours. Teachers will not be allowed to carry phones inside classrooms and must keep them in staff rooms or designated safe areas, while students are completely prohibited from bringing mobiles. The order highlights that mobile usage distracts students, hampers academic performance, and leads to stress, anxiety, sleep issues, and other health concerns.

Director of Education Ashish Kohli has instructed all Deputy Directors and school heads to ensure strict compliance, with surprise inspections to monitor the implementation. Violations by teachers may lead to disciplinary action. Emergency landline facilities will be made available in schools for both teachers and students, with details shared with parents.

While the directive is expected to benefit students, teachers have raised concerns as their attendance, mid-day meal records, and academic reporting are all currently managed through mobile-based apps. Teacher associations have demanded practical alternatives to app-based tasks, warning that without solutions, they may oppose the order.
