Indira Gandhi Sukh Shiksha Yojana Uplifting Underprivileged Children in Shimla

Shimla, July 6, 2025 – The Indira Gandhi Sukh Shiksha Yojana is proving a boon for poor and needy children in Shimla district. In 2025-26, ₹83.77 lakh has been disbursed, benefiting 1,190 children under 18 years. Run by the Women and Child Development Department, the scheme provides ₹1,000 monthly aid to children of widows, disabled, and divorced women to support their education. Children above 18 years pursuing higher or technical education also receive free hostel and tuition fee benefits. District Programme Officer Mamta Paul emphasized the scheme’s success across 11 development blocks through Anganwadi workers’ efforts. Beneficiaries like Shishubala, Sulochana, and Renu Thakur shared how the scheme is helping their children’s education. Deputy Commissioner Anupam Kashyap reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring education and development opportunities for every underprivileged child in the district.
