CPI(M) to Intensify Statewide Protest Against Bus Fare Hike in Himachal

1 min read

Shimla, 25 May 2025 – The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has announced that it will intensify its statewide agitation against the recent bus fare hikes imposed by the Himachal Pradesh government. Terming the fare hike unjustified and anti-people, the party stated that the burden of inflation is increasing on citizens already suffering from the government’s neoliberal policies.

CPI(M) criticized the state for doubling the minimum fare from ₹5 to ₹10, followed by a 15% overall hike, making fares higher than neighboring states. The party also slammed the sharp rise in school bus pass rates, calling the revised rates (₹1200, ₹1800, and ₹2000 per month) still nearly double the earlier prices.

The party accused the government of pushing HRTC into losses by favoring private operators—currently given over 8300 routes compared to HRTC’s 2500—and not investing in new buses or staff recruitment. CPI(M) opposes any privatization of the state transport corporation.

The party also raised concerns over hundreds of privately-run Volvo buses operating illegally in tourist areas without proper permits or tax payments. It demanded strict tax enforcement on these operators instead of burdening the public.

CPI(M) has demanded immediate rollback of all fare hikes and warned of continued mass agitation if demands are not met.
