Effective Communication is Key in Disaster Management: Deputy Commissioner

Shimla, February 19: In a bid to enhance disaster preparedness and communication efficiency, the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) conducted a communication mock drill on Wednesday. Deputy Commissioner Anupam Kashyap supervised the exercise from the district control room, using a satellite phone to establish contact with all Sub-Divisional Magistrates (SDMs). However, connectivity issues prevented communication with the Kupvi, Kotkhai, and Shimla Rural SDMs, raising concerns over the reliability of the satellite communication system.

The DC expressed dissatisfaction with the drill’s outcome and stated that BSNL would be issued a notice regarding the persistent signal problems. He emphasized that seamless communication is crucial for disaster response and connectivity failures during emergencies could significantly hinder relief operations.

Training for SDMs on Satellite Phone Operations

The DC announced a special training session on February 22, where all SDMs and relevant staff will receive hands-on instruction on satellite phone operations. He stressed that field staff must be proficient in using satellite phones to ensure effective coordination during disasters. Moving forward, regular mock drills will be conducted to prevent communication breakdowns during emergencies.

Jakhu Ropeway Mock Drill for Emergency Response

A mock drill was also held at Jakhu Ropeway on Wednesday to test rescue preparedness for emergency situations. During the drill, stranded individuals were safely evacuated from a height of 100 meters using harnesses and ropes. The rescue operation lasted 1.5 hours, involving teams from NDRF, SDRF, and other departments.

The exercise began with a table-top discussion, where officials reviewed emergency protocols. The drill then assessed response times, coordination, and preparedness. NDRF personnel demonstrated how to safely evacuate stranded individuals, ensuring they reached the hospital promptly.

Mock Drills are Crucial for Emergency Readiness: Jyoti Rana

Additional District Magistrate (Protocol) Jyoti Rana, who led the exercise, stated that annual mock drills are essential for emergency preparedness. She emphasized that such drills equip rescue teams with practical experience and help ensure a swift response during real-life emergencies.
