Hamirpur: On December 28, 2024, the Congress party organized a condolence meeting at Gandhi Chowk to honor the legacy of former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh. Party workers from across the district gathered to pay homage by observing a moment of silence.

Speaking on the occasion, Rajeev Rana, Chairman of the Unorganized Workers and Employees Congress (KKC), highlighted Dr. Manmohan Singh’s critical role in shaping India’s economic policies during his tenure as Finance Minister under Narasimha Rao’s government in 1991. At that time, India faced a severe economic crisis, with foreign reserves dwindling to just $1 billion and 47 tons of gold pledged abroad. Dr. Singh’s liberalization policies, introduced in the July 24, 1991, budget, ended the License Raj and stabilized the economy.

Rana pointed out that these reforms increased foreign reserves to $5.6 billion by the end of FY 1991-92 and to $25.2 billion by 1994-95, fueling rapid growth in investment and exports. Dr. Singh’s contributions were pivotal in steering the nation out of financial turmoil toward economic stability.

He also recalled Singh’s tenure as Prime Minister, during which landmark initiatives like the Right to Education Act, National Food Security Act, and administrative transparency reforms were introduced. Singh’s leadership also led to the historic Indo-US nuclear deal.

Congress leaders, including KCCB Chairman Kuldeep Singh Pathania, former MLA Anita Verma, and AICC observer Prabhakar Jha, along with other prominent party members, attended the event to honor Dr. Singh’s enduring legacy.
