Shimla, 22nd September 2024: The second day of the prestigious Slater Debates at Bishop Cotton School began with an inspiring address by the Director, Mr. Simon Weale, in the school chapel. He emphasized the importance of public speaking, stating that debating is an “integral part of our school calendar as debating is an essential life skill.”

Named in honor of Rev. Dr. Samuel Slater, the first headmaster of BCS, the Slater Debates hold historical significance. Last year’s winners, Mallinson Girls’ School from Srinagar, were represented by Ms. Syed Bareen Qadri, who spoke passionately about the challenges faced by students in Kashmir, saying, “Children in Kashmir were robbed of many opportunities, but we have always shown that it’s not about the past but how strong you come back.”

The first debate of the day was a thrilling contest between St. Thomas and Tyndale Biscoe School, Srinagar, on the motion, “Make in India is a political tool to gain votes.” Tyndale Biscoe opposed the motion and emerged victorious, with their lead speaker arguing, “Development is not building dams or roads but building the people.”

Another fiercely contested debate followed between Yadvindra Public School and Wynberg Allen School, Mussoorie. The motion, “The Indian School curriculum is far better for India than any foreign board,” saw the proposition presenting strong factual support, but Wynberg Allen secured the win.

The day concluded with excitement for the upcoming debates, setting the stage for a stimulating intellectual exchange in the coming rounds.
