The Mallinson Girls School Triumphs in XXVI Rev. Dr. Samuel Slater Debate Finals

Finals of the Inter-School Debate Competition*

In the culminating event of the XXVI Rev. Dr. Samuel Slater Memorial Invitational Debate competition, the most anticipated debate unfolded, invoking an adrenaline rush among the judges, as well as the participating debaters from The Mallinson Girls School, Srinagar, and La Martiniere Girls College, Lucknow. These two exceptional schools earned their places in the finals of this intellectual contest, marked by an intriguing and thought-provoking contesting motion: “Punishment cannot improve behavior.”

This challenging motion immersed the audience into a realm of speculation, showcasing the remarkable debating skills of both sides. The proposition team, led by the eloquent debaters from La Martiniere Girls’ College, substantiated their stance with references to crucial concepts like “slavery” and “emotional problems.” Their argument centered on the idea that reward is a more effective motivator than punishment when it comes to influencing behavior. On the other hand, the opposition vehemently argued that “Judicial systems around the world” and institutions responsible for a child’s development rely heavily on punitive measures such as “Detention.” They deconstructed the proposition’s stance by highlighting that justice itself is based on principles of punishment, emphasizing that there is no room for the denial of justice.

In a display of intellectual prowess, The Mallinson Girls College, Srinagar, emerged victorious over La Martiniere Girls College, Lucknow. Zainab from The Mallinson Girls School was recognized as the tournament’s best speaker. Aarav from Bishop Cotton School, Shimla, was praised for his courage in the face of adversity. Suhani Agarwal, representing The La Martiniere Girls’ College, Lucknow, was celebrated as the most promising speaker.

The Chief Guest for this prestigious event was Mr. Anuj Tomar, Deputy General Commandant of Home Guards and Civil Defence, who enlightened the audience with his words on the significance of cultivating the right attitude in life.
