HPNLU: First Convocation 2022 Held

Himachal Pradesh National Law University, Shimla, organised the First Convocation 2022 on 19 November 2022, Saturday at the Adventure Resorts, New Kufri, Shimla.
Honourable Judges from the Supreme Court of India, Honourable Members of the Governing, Executive, and Academic Council of the University, and the Hon’ble Judges of the High Court of Himachal Pradesh graced the occasion. Vice Chancellors from various National Law Universities across the country also participated in the convocation.
Hon’ble Justice Sanjiv Khanna, Judge, Supreme Court of India and the Visitor of the University Presided Over the event and Delivered the Convocation Address. Hon’ble Justice Amjad Ahtesham Sayed, Chief Justice, High Court of Himachal Pradesh and the Chancellor of the University Conferred the Degrees.
The University conferred degrees, honoris causa, on four well known jurists from across the nation. Apart from this, one Ph.D. in Law Degree; 108 LL.M. Degrees, and 157 Degrees of B.A./B.B.B.A. LL.B. degrees were awarded in the Convocation. In addition 18 Gold Medals and Prizes were also conferred.
Hon’ble Justice V. Ramasubramanian, Judge Supreme Court of India, Hon’ble Justice Deepak Gupta, Former Judge, Supreme Court of India, and Hon’ble Justice Mansoor Ahmad Mir, Former Chief Justice, High Court of Himachal Pradesh attended the event.
Hon’ble Justice Surya Kant, Judge, Supreme Court of India was conferred the Degree of Doctorate of Philosophy of Laws (honoris causa) in absentia, and Hon’ble Justice V. Ramasubramanian, Judge, Supreme Court of India, Hon’ble Justice Deepak Gupta, Former Judge, Supreme Court of India, and Hon’ble Justice Mansoor Ahmad Mir, Former Chief Justice, High Court of Himachal Pradesh were conferred the Degree of Doctorate of Philosophy of Laws (Honoris Causa) by the University, in-person.
The following candidates were conferred Vice-Chancellor’s Gold Medal for their exemplary academic performance in the postgraduate programme – Ruby Yadav (Batch 2017-18 PG), daughter of Dharampal Yadav, Ms. Shagun Sharma (Batch 2018-19 PG), Vershika Sharma (Batch 2019-20, PG), daughter of Ramji Sharma, Anushka Ukrani (Batch 2020-21 PG), daughter of Pradeep Ukrani. In the undergraduate, a total of 6 gold have been constituted by the University viz. – Dr. Ashutosh Gold Medal, Sri Shyam Sundar Goel Memorial Gold Medal, Vice-Chancellor’s Gold Medal, Chancellor’s Gold Medal, and Hon’ble Justice Dharam Paul Sood Gold Medal. Nikhat Jamal, daughter of Jamal Ahmad bagged the first three constituted gold medals from the batch 2016-21 and Pranjal Sharma, daughter of Virender Sharma bagged the latter two gold medals from the batch 2016-21 along with a fellowship, Chancellor’s Fellowship Prize, of INR 10000/-. The K.K. Luthra Memorial Gold Medal in Criminal Law was bagged by Sonu Khandelwal, daughter of Kailash Khandelwal. Further in the batch of 2017-22, the first 5 gold medals were awarded to Ms. Priyanka Thakur, daughter of Balbir Singh Thakur along with the Chancellor’s prize whereas Ms. Mansi Sharma, daughter of Mr. Shubhash Sharma bagged the K.K. Luthra Memorial Gold Medal in Criminal Law.
Hon’ble Justice Sanjiv Khanna, in his Convocation address motivated the students and spoke about the importance of law as a career. During his address he said – Law is one of the most important disciplines which shape the normative, structural, and functional characters of the society. It defines normality and abnormality, creates legitimate expectation which is considered as the foundational principle for freedom of contract and exchange, establishes the checks and balances, which are the cornerstone for the rule of law and a just and fair society.
The Convocation was organised under the leadership of Prof. Nishtha Jaswal, Vice-Chancellor, HPNLU, Shimla and in support of Dr. Chanchal Kumar Singh, the Controller of Examinations, HPNLU, Shimla and Prof. S.S. Jaswal, Registrar, HPNLU, Shimla. The team consisting of Kali Ram, Assistant Registrar, Rahul, Sahil, Dinesh, Raveen, Sushma, Himanshu and the faculty members of the University immensely contributed to the conducting of the event.
