116 SUMAN facilities providing services to mother and child across the State

The Government Spokesperson today informed that “SUMAN” – Surakshit Matritva Aashwasan is an initiative of Ministry of Health and Family welfare that promotes safe pregnancy, childbirth and care after pregnancy with respect and dignity. He said that the aim of the scheme is to assure dignified, respectful and quality healthcare at no cost for every woman and newborn visiting the public health facilities. This will prevent maternal and newborn diseases and deaths and provide a positive birthing experience.
The Government Spokesperson said that the MoHFW categorized the SUMAN facilities into three levels. SUMAN Basic level-I facilities include all health facilities having an annual load of more than 10 deliveries per annum. SUMAN Basic Emergency Obstetric and New-Born Care level-II facilities include the health facilities with an annual load of more than 50 deliveries per annum and SUMAN Comprehensive Emergency Obstetric and New-Born Care level –III facilities includes facilities with delivery load of more than 99 annually.
The Government Spokesperson further told that in continuation of the SUMAN initiative, to integrate the Maternal & Child Health services being provided at health facilities the Hon’ble Governor of Himachal Pradesh notified Integrated Mother & Child Hospitals in the state as “SUMAN- Vaatsalay Asaptal” in 2021. He said that based on the delivery load and child health facilities available at various health facilities, the “Vaatsalay Asaptal” in the State have been categorized into three levels. He said that the SUMAN Vaatsalay Asaptal level-I facilities include 41 health facilities having an annual load of more than 10 deliveries per annum and equipped with New Born Care Corner (NBCC). The SUMAN Vaatsalay Asaptal level-II facilities include 52 health facilities with an annual load of more than 50 deliveries per annum and equipped with New Born stabilization unit (NBSU). The SUMAN Vaatsalay Asaptal level –III facilities include 23 facilities equipped with Special Newborn Care Unit (SNCU) with delivery load of preferably more than 999 per annum.
The Government Spokesperson said that when a lower level facility attains the desired level in terms of services and further improves upon the delivery load, then such facilities would be considered for up-gradation from lower level SUMAN facility to higher level SUMAN facility.
